Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra that manufactures and sells pharmaceutical formulations and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) primarily in India and the United States. Today Sun Pharma is the second largest and the most profitable pharmaceutical company in India, as well as the largest pharmaceutical company by market capitalisation on the Indian exchanges.
Sun had multiple AV’s and active servers from different vendors like McAfee, Symantec and Trend Micro. across the globe. Multiple AV Teams were managing these Servers and it was a nightmare supporting the endpoints, collating data from these different Servers and sharing the dashboard / latest Status organization wide.
Sun Pharma wanted to consolidate all these different AV being used and get it under a single AV that could manage and keep secure a total of 18,000 endpoints consisting of approximately 13,500 desktops and laptops, 2500 Servers and 2000 Instruments across more than 100 sites globally.
Challenges Faced by the Customer: –
Sun Pharma having its offices, manufacturing units spread across globally and having multiple acquisitions over a period, had multiple AV’s from different vendors like McAfee, Symantec, and Trend Micro. They had multiple McAfee ePO’s Servers, Symantec Servers, and Trend Micro Servers active across the globe.
Multiple AV Teams were managing these Servers and it was a nightmare supporting the endpoints, collating data from these different Servers and sharing the dashboard / latest Status organization wide. The AV being hosted on multiple Servers (hardware), each one having the Windows Servers OS, and the support cost to maintain the hardware, which by itself was an enormous cost.
The AV being hosted on multiple Servers (hardware), each one having the Windows Servers OS, and the support cost to maintain the hardware, which by itself was an enormous cost.
As there are OEM software running on the Instruments, Microsoft patching and security updates are not carried out in India location. The team faced an issue when upgrading the Windows 7 Systems, with the latest McAfee ENS AV, the existing AV got uninstalled, and the new ENS failed to install. With support from the OEM, it was concluded that the latest OS Updates and Security patches were missing. The Team build scripts to include the respective OS Patches and the new AV installation. These scripts were shared to users across the Globe for the different Domains in the organization.
The technology challenges-
- Guard against attacks.
- Quicken detection and response to threats.
- Manage security centrally and with ease.
Solution
McAfee Endpoint Protection from McAfee as Sun Pharma was already using multiple McAfee solutions like DLP hence deployment and manageability of multiple solutions from 1 single console.
Technology Used-
- McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator
- McAfee Complete Endpoint Threat Protection
- McAfee Active Response (MAR)
- McAfee Data Exchange Layer (DXL Broker) and
- McAfee Threat Intelligence Exchange (TIE) Manager
Impact of the Solution
Pre-deployment customer’s AV infra was completely shattered with different locations having different AV vendors and there was no single view of the entire infra, post deployment customer now has a single dashboard from which he can manage all of his 18000 endpoints, gets alerts across regions and have complete visibility of his endpoint security.
Single Console Management
Since McAfee has a broad range of product categories which can be managed from single console was a big advantage where in TIE connects with all the endpoints and exchanges any threats identified and DXL connects with various provides to provide data on latest threats and MAR analyzing those threats and preventing future attacks.
- Ease of management and enterprise-wide visibility.
- Improved endpoint protection that catches more malware and defends better against zero-day threats.
- Accelerated time to protection, thanks to integrated security solutions that share threat information in near real time.
- Operational time savings from easier security administration and fewer incidents.
- Numerous hours saved weekly by information security engineers.
- Increased productivity of both end users and security operations.
- Huge Operational Cost Savings and Time saving from a single solution.
- Reduction in Hardware and Software licensing cost.
Sun Pharma is Embee’s existing customer where-in an RFP was floated and McAfee recommended Embee for the same, Embee aggressively worked with McAfee to offer Sun Pharma L1 commercials against competitors.
The McAfee ePO was setup, configured and the clients, both AV and MAR, were pushed from the ePO Console.
Sun Pharma has purchased the following licenses-
MFE EP Threat Defence and Response – 18,000 Licenses
- MFE Complete EP Threat Protect – 18,000 Licenses
As the upgradation / migration was seamless, Users were not aware of the same. Knowledge sharing session carried out for the INDIA AV Admin and US AV Admin Team.
