The Challenge
the payments platform runs a payment gateway platform that demands uninterrupted transaction processing under strict uptime commitments. Regulatory and business-continuity requirements mandated a disaster recovery site in a different seismic zone from production and that requirement collided with a hard technical constraint.
The core gaps:
- The DR site had to sit in a different seismic zone from the production environment (a different seismic zone) for regulatory and business-continuity compliance
- Native Azure paired-region replication could not be used, because the designated DR site was a third-party data centre.
- No compliant replication mechanism existed between Azure and a third-party data centre, creating operational and recovery risk
- The platform required enterprise-grade failover automation, recovery validation, and compliance assurance for mission-critical financial workloads
The trigger was regulatory: increasing scrutiny around business continuity and disaster recovery for financial transaction platforms, the need to mitigate regional-disaster risk to payment processing, and a requirement to achieve a compliant DR posture aligned with financial-industry standards and audit expectations. The prior architecture, primary workloads in Azure Central India with no compliant cross-seismic-zone DR, left the business exposed.
